Why Detox?

Toxins are almost impossible to avoid these days.  Our environment is filled with them from the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat.  Sometimes even our jobs expose us to high levels of toxins. But even if they don’t, they’re in our walls, our floors, our furniture, our electronics, and our cars.  And unless you buy the super expensive special stuff from the health food store, they’re even in our cleaning products, cosmetics, deodorants, and shampoos!

What is Detoxing?

While our bodies are designed to process and flush out toxins by way of the liver and kidneys, modern life can make their workload a little hard to keep up with.  So what is a detox exactly? Since your body can rid itself of toxins without any help from you, thank you, what does this entail?  

Basically, you are minimizing toxins in areas you do have control of – generally your diet and home.  You are also eating more things that support your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and digestion.  Depending on your location, lifestyle, and diet, you may or may not need to detox every so often to stay healthy.  I like to think of it as a yearly tune-up.

Do you need to detox? 

Maybe you live up in the mountains far away from everything.  All of your food comes from your own biodynamic farm, you make your own soap, and ride your horse whenever it’s too far to walk.  Then again, maybe you don’t.

What is a holistic detox and why should you do it?

A holistic detox focuses on your whole self and treats not only your body, but also your mind and spirit.  So, not only do you refresh and renew your body, you come out of it with a new you!  This new you is not only healthier and more energetic, but also happier and more empowered.  Detoxing in this way has a far more profound and lasting effect on your entire life.

How long should you detox?

Three weeks is a good amount of time to reset your body and get it running properly again.  It is also the perfect amount of time to cement new good habits so your life will be transformed.  If you are very self-motivated have a supportive home life, then a book should do the trick.  But many people find it emotionally challenging and do better with group programs.  Detoxing with a group gives you access to a coach.  You can ask questions, check in, get feedback, and interact with other members so you can share experiences and support each other.
